Vision Australia: Refreshing an iconic brand to drive 35% fundraising growth

Reimagining one of Australia’s most iconic Christmas traditions

For 88 years, Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight has been part of Australia’s Christmas story, watched by millions each year while raising vital funds for children who are blind or have low vision.

But while audiences loved the event, fundraising growth had stalled. And by 2025, revenue had plateaued for four consecutive years. Many Australians didn’t realise Vision Australia was the organisation behind it.

Vision Australia needed more than a fundraising campaign. They needed to reignite audience action while rebuilding the emotional connection between Carols and the purpose driving it,  without losing the joy and nostalgia that made the event iconic.

Share the Magic

Together, Vision Australia and ntegrity uncovered a pivotal strategic insight:

The cause could not sit beside the event, it had to become part of the experience itself.

Traditional fundraising often relies on emotional interruption: pausing entertainment to present hardship and ask for support. But during Carols, that risked breaking the emotional magic audiences came for.

Instead, the strategy focused on integration. Generosity needed to feel like a natural extension of the Carols experience itself. That thinking led to a new creative concept:

Share the Magic.

The idea unified every audience touchpoint under one emotional truth:

  • Share the magic of Christmas

  • Share the magic of community

  • Share the magic of childhood possibility

  • Share the magic Vision Australia creates for children and families

  • Share the magic of giving

Rather than separating fundraising from entertainment, the campaign embedded purpose directly into the heart of the experience.

Where emotional storytelling meets brand transformation

At the heart of the campaign was Eddy, a young boy born blind, and the story of how Vision Australia helped his family transform fear into confidence and possibility. Rather than relying on traditional charity tropes, the storytelling focused on emotional honesty, allowing audiences to feel hopeful, connected and inspired to act.

Alongside this, Vision Australia and ntegrity introduced the most significant creative refresh in the event’s modern history. Moving away from the long-standing purple identity, Carols by Candlelight was reimagined through a vibrant new visual system designed around warmth, accessibility and wonder. Handcrafted artwork, sparkling textures and modern design elements created a more contemporary experience while preserving the nostalgia audiences loved.

Embedding the cause into the experience itself

For the first time, every part of the Carols experience… from the live event and broadcast through to fundraising, digital advertising, social content and partner communications, unmistakably reflected Vision Australia’s brand and purpose. Every touchpoint was designed to strengthen emotional connection, attribution and audience participation.

The strength of “Share the Magic” came from how deeply the platform was integrated across the entire campaign ecosystem. Television, radio, PR, paid media, email and corporate partnerships all worked together to connect audiences emotionally, then make participation immediate and easy.

One of the campaign’s most powerful moments came during the live national broadcast, where Vision Australia, ntegrity and Channel 9 wove cause storytelling organically into the rhythm of the event itself. A live interview with Eddy’s father created one of the evening’s most emotionally resonant moments, allowing millions of Australians to experience Vision Australia’s impact in real time.

Turning emotional connection into measurable growth

The campaign also carefully removed friction between emotional connection and audience action. On-screen QR codes allowed viewers to donate instantly during key broadcast moments, while clearer donation pathways and subtle changes like shifting the URL from “givetocarols” to “donatetovision”, strengthened the connection between the event and Vision Australia itself.

Matched-giving was thoughtfully reintroduced by skillfully structuring it around the nature of the live broadcast, taking into account Australia’s different time zones. This ensured the match was managed appropriately while giving viewers a clear and genuine window in which their donations would be matched.

Together, the refreshed brand, integrated storytelling and seamless donation experience transformed Carols by Candlelight from a passive entertainment event into a powerful expression of generosity and purpose.

“Share the Magic” became the most commercially and strategically successful campaign in the 88-year history of Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight.

The event was also the most watched television program on Christmas Eve, while Vision Australia overtook both Channel 9 and AAMI in spontaneous brand attribution linked to the event. Spontaneous association with Vision Australia also increased from 13% to 18% — helping firmly reconnect one of Australia’s most iconic Christmas traditions back to the organisation behind it.

Most importantly, the funds raised will help more than 300 families access early specialist support services for children who are blind or have low vision.
